Tampa Bay releases linebacker Deone Bucannon

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have decided to sort their team out by cutting one of its linebackers from the 53-man squad. The latest cut from the roster is linebacker Deone Bucannon.

Adam Schefter of ESPN confirmed the release with a tweet.

The former first-round pick in 2014 did not start a single game in the five weeks he was with the Bucs. He didn’t manage to do any tackles save for one against the Los Angeles Rams. It was an unproductive stint for the linebacker, and it’s understandable why the team decided to let him go.

However, there are teams who are reported to be interested in his services. One of the teams where he could end up is the Cleveland Browns as he used to play for Browns defensive coordinator Steve Wilks in Arizona.

Sports Illustrated’s Pete Smith wrote more about the connection and why it could work:

With the season ending injury to Chris Kirksey, the Browns have been playing fifth round rookie Mack Wilson. A one-year starter at Alabama, it’s been a bumpy ride. The game is moving incredibly fast for him and he’s had trouble adjusting as a result.

That isn’t to suggest the Browns don’t like him, but if they want someone that might be able to come in and play better right now, especially as the Browns have their bye week after this coming game against the Seattle Seahawks, they might like Bucannon.

It’s still unknown where he will end up at the season’s end, but there are plenty of teams looking for reinforcement on their defensive line. Bucannon would be a great addition for any of those teams.
